Chris Strickland, Kalen Karnes and Courtney Smith cross the finish line. We enjoyed another successful Mother's Day run in New York City's Central Park and corresponding Liz's legacy fundraiser. The 10-mile race on May 11th, 2008 was completed by my sister Laurel and myself (Kalen Karnes), as well as our boyfriends and close friends.
My mother (Liz Karnes) shared my excitement about this annual Mother's Day race when she was alive because it supports different women's charities each year as well as my personal success of completing my first half marathon at this event. This year's race supported "The Race to Erase Domestic Violence", organized by the New York Junior League. A week following the event, we celebrated the completion of the Mother's Day run for all who participated, while raising money for Liz's Legacy. It was a special event filled with friends and family, many of whom were from Nebraska. The fundraiser was held at the Burger Shoppe, a new restaurant in the Wall Street area opened by my friend, Heather Tierney. Thank you, Heather, for agreeing to donate a portion of the evening's proceeds to the NU Foundation and Liz's Legacy. We are grateful for the help of many individuals who made this event successful. In addition to Heather Tierney, a special thanks goes to Matthew DeCosta and Will Aiken. We look forward to successful Mother's Day runs and subsequent fundraising events in the years to come.
