Find support, inspiration, and hope in these stories about other people and how their lives have been affected by cancer. In America alone, there are 9.6 million people living with a history of cancer. Major advances in prevention, early detection and treatment have resulted in longer survival.

  • In her first year as First Lady of the United States of America, Betty Ford underwent surgery for breast cancer. Due to her status and personality, she was able to speak openly and honestly about her illness and encourage and support women who were going through similar issues with breast cancer.   • Nancy Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, is the younger sister of Susan G. Komen. The girls grew up in Peoria, Illinois in the 1970’s. Susan was the picture of perfection while Nancy was the chubby younger sister who was always trying to climb into the spotlight. The girls grew up together before growing apart until the fateful news that Susan had breast cancer brought Nancy home to Peoria.

    Susan trusted the family physician during her diagnosis and put all of her hope into his surgical qualifications when he told her that she was “cured.” After a three-year battle, proving the family physician wrong time and time again, Susan died from a severe case of breast cancer.

    The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation hosts the Komen Race for the Cure, a more than 20-year-old tradition. Every year over 1.5 million people participate in 100 Komen walks around the United States.
